Chrysalidocarpus (Dypsis) leptocheilos x decaryi; Chrysalidocarpus x leptocaryi

Common Name:  Chrysalidocarpus (Dypsis) leptocheilos x decaryi; Chrysalidocarpus x leptocaryi

Sun:  Full Sun

Growth Rate:  Slow when young, fast once larger

Fertilizer:  Low

Water:  Low

Cold Tolerance:  Around 25-28deg F

History:  This hybrid was the one that started our obsession with palm hybrids!  Our co-founder discovered this palm on Daryl O'Connor's page (Australia) in 2004.  Ever since, we have been striving to become the world's #1 producer of this hybrid.  We were the ones who originally coined the name "Tri-Bear" meaning a combination of the Triangle and Teddybear palms (although the Teddybear is actually the mother tree in nearly every instance).  We first tried to develop the Teddybear x Triangle Hybrid in Anaheim, CA in 2005 by pollinating a Triangle Palm (Dypsis decaryi).  This produced only parthenocarpic (non-viable) fruits.  Since then, we have been producing the hybrid successfully here in Fort Myer, Florida for the past 13 years.   Read the article by Don Hodel and co-authored by one of our founders

Production:
This palm pops up by accident in South Florida and Australia (and less often in Hawaii). We produce ours by manual-cross pollination here in Southwest Florida with production numbers ranging from 5-10 plants per year to 40-50 plants per year. Some years our trees don't yield any.

Benefits:  All the beauty of the semi-common Teddybear Palm but with the drought-tolerance of a Triangle palm and much faster growing than either parent.

Identification:  Eophyll (first leaf) is typically bifid but wide and with ruffled leaves. Dark green with a thick stem. Also is known to open pink to deep red new leaves when 1 gallon size. This goes away as it gets older.
