Wodyetia bifurcata x Veitchia arecina variegated
Common Name: Wodyetia bifurcata x Veitchia arecina variegated
Sun: Filtered sun, morning/afternoon sun, shade
Growth Rate: Fast
Fertilizer: Low
Water: Low to Moderate
Cold Tolerance: 25-28deg F
History: This is one of the most popular and talked-about hybrid in the world. It is found mostly by accident from open-pollinated Wodyetia (Foxtail Palms) that happen to have Veitchia palms flowering in the vicinity. It is our belief that the variegation is caused because the chlorophyll in the leaflets tends to congregate, leaving portions of the leaflets with chlorophyll and portions void of chlorophyll and this only occurs when the Veitchia pollen donor is itself an intergeneric hybrid. In other words, it is caused when an intergeneric hybrid is created with pollen from an interspecific hybrid Veitchia instead of a pure Veitchia. In our experience, a Wodyetia (obviously pure) that is crossed with a Veitchia (with good pedigree of being pure) produces an ALL green grex (batch of seeds from the same infructescence) of palms.
Production: The seed parent is always Wodyetia (Foxtail) and the pollen parent is always Veitchia (Montgomery Palm). The reverse cross also exists which is called a Lady Fox Palm.
Benefits: Beautiful dual-colored fronds that are gracefully drooping. The palm is also fast growing.
Identification: Easy- the seedling came off a Foxtail Palm (Wodyetia) and has obvious yellow or white striping on it that does not go away with fertilizer or age.
